Depression Self Treatment Without Medicine
Do you suffer from depression? Have you heard of all the
side effects of drugs and are afraid to try them? Do you feel depressed but
maybe you don’t think it’s bad enough that you want to try to take medication?
Here we will look at 7 natural remedies that can help treat your depression
without taking medication. Welcome to Family Med, I am Dr. Richardson and this
is your home with practical and accurate information to help your family make
healthy decisions. This is a channel focused on bringing a better life to your
home. In this article we will look at simple, safe and natural things you can
do to help manage your stress. These suggestions are especially helpful when
you are suffering from mild to moderate depression. It is not intended to
replace your current treatment and certainly should not be discontinued any
medication without the care of your doctor. So I hope you were able to visit
with your doctor and get a good diagnosis. If you have severe symptoms such as
suicidal thoughts or suicidal thoughts, you need immediate help. Talk to
friends or family, your doctor or go to the Emergency Room or call the national
suicide prevention number below. Remember, there is help out there. So talk to
your doctor and you feel that the medicine is not for you or maybe you are
taking the medicine and you are still looking for other things you can do to
reduce your reliance on them. What are your options? Yes, the first non-medical
option I recommend for treating depression is something called Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy or CBT. This is a well-studied and potentially effective
drug in the treatment of moderate to severe depression. CBT is usually done by
a doctor such as a psychiatrist or a licensed social worker. A CBT specialist
helps you identify the negative thoughts you have and helps you see how they
affect your mental health. Persistent negative thoughts can have a real impact
on the chemicals in your brain such as serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine
that control your mood. By helping us to recognize our negative thoughts and
develop strategies to respond to them, a good therapist has shown that it is
very effective in treating depression. What I have noticed though is that I
often get a lot of skepticism with my patients to do treatment. They feel that
there is some sort of prejudice against them. What I am telling them though is
that I see it as, "physical therapy for the brain". If you hurt your
knee you would have no second thoughts by going to a health and fitness
professional who helps your knee get better. We would not look at that person
and think that he is weak, we see him as smart and in control of his life. It
is no different to going to a mental health professional. Sometimes all you
need to do is learn a few mental exercises in order to work to restore your
brain to good health. So do not sell a short Therapist. They can do wonders in
treating depression. The second thing I recommend is often a dirty word in many
of our names. That's the word "E", or "Exercise". You heard
me right. Exercise is a powerful antidote to depression. Studies show that both
high intensity and moderate stiffness can be effective in treating moderate to
severe stress. I’ve always thought runners are crazy when they talk about “top
runners”. I still think they are crazy but there is a real chemical release in
the brain that is happening that can affect emotions in a positive way.
Speaking of moderate exercise, it has been shown that certain chemicals are
released that help the nerves grow and build new connections in the sensory
brain. As with anti-depressants, it takes a few weeks for this to start
working. I recommend that you do at least 5 days for at least 30 minutes a day
of some physical exercise. Choose something you like, and if you don't enjoy
it, at least pick something you don't hate. Unfortunately, when you are
stressed out exercise can be the last thing you want to do but stick to it and
you will start to see the difference. The third thing you need to do is work on
how you eat. Here in the United States the way we eat is awesome. What we often
call food is often garbage. I went around my local Walmart and photographed the
sales. If you go backwards and really look at what we put into our bodies, most
of which we can't even say, it is clear that all these chemicals, antibodies
and additives are very harmful to our bodies. This is not diet, this is edible
drugs which means they keep us addicted. "Bet you can't eat just one
meal" is a reality. Another similarity is that if we put bad gas in your
car you get a bad performance. Our bodies are no different. Stay away from
processed foods, reduce or eliminate carbs and refined sugars from your diet.
Reduce your caffeine intake - Did you know that high caffeine levels can lower
your serotonin levels? But it is not just what you should not eat. We must
focus on having a healthy diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables and healthy
protein. Eating foods high in omega 3 fatty acids such as Salmon, mackerel,
sardine, healthy fats such as coconut oil have been found as a serotonin supplement
that can have a positive effect on your mood. The fourth thing you need to do
is manage your stress. In the long run, chronic stress increases the level of a
hormone called cortisol that causes changes in your body and mind that increase
the risk of depression. Take a good look at your health.
What are the things that because you stress? Are you stuck
with a job that you hate? have relationship problems? do you live with feelings
of guilt or are you overreacting to your life? Sit down and do a real test of
where you are. Write down what you can change and what you can do. Work to
change what you can do. Those things you think you can't change, find out how
to deal with them better or more often than ways we can change those, we may
just need to think differently. This is something a good mentor can help you to
work with. In addition to exercise, learn the best way to manage stress, such
as meditation, prayer, Yoga, or massage. All of these things have proven to be
useful so start putting one or all of them into your life and see what kind of
difference it makes. The fifth thing you need to work on is getting enough
sleep. I know this is hard. Believe me, I have 5 children and most of them are
teenagers who feel like they need to sleep. Sleep is a struggle for all of us
but it is very important. We need 7-8 hours of sleep as an adult and more so
for our youth to be healthy. Sleep is where the body prepares itself. This is
where all the emotions in the brain strengthen and produce new memories. When
we do not get the sleep we need, everything is turned off. If you have a
problem with sleep and work with your doctor find ways to improve it. Make sure
you do not experience sleep apnea, a condition in which you do not breathe well
at night. There is a strong link between sleep apnea and depression. Go online
and do some research using the word "sleep hygiene" to find ideas and
ideas you can do to improve your sleep.
The sixth recommendation I have for you is to surround
yourself with the right people and influences. We as human beings are a type of
society. We need human communication. Unfortunately, one of the biggest
challenges you face when dealing with depression is the urge to isolate
yourself. You start to see the world as an opposition to you or that you don’t
need it or don’t want it, so the best thing you can think of is to isolate
yourself. This is the worst thing you can do. Surround yourself with friends
and family and stay away from those who are always trying to drag you down.
Irresponsibility often breeds apathy. If you are surrounded by people who are
dragging you down, who are using you or who have no interest in you then run
away. If you are in a destructive relationship find ways to improve it or leave
it. OK so the seventh and last one I will talk about today and it can be one of
the hardest when you are suffering from depression but I think it can also be
the most effective.
I want you to go out and serve someone else. Participate in
charitable work. Find a needy, devoted neighbor in a homeless shelter. It is
amazing that when we forget about serving other people what effect it has on
our mental health. We live in a self-centered society, and this has a
detrimental effect on our overall health and well-being. Go out and practice
the habit of working and looking after others you will see a positive impact on
your life. If you are striving to find equality opportunities, I would
recommend the website. For those in the United States there is a website called
Justserve.org that you can go to that offers opportunities for volunteering in
many communities. So go out and help someone else see how it will make a
difference in your life. Depression is a real condition and can greatly affect
your health. There are many different treatments you can use and it often takes
a variety of methods to find something that will work for you. It is important
to remember, however, that if these or other things you try do not work there
are other options out there. Sometimes in spite of everything you do the
symptoms will never go away. If you find yourself in such a situation, go and
talk to your doctor. Sometimes like diabetes or high blood pressure you need to
take medication to help control it.
Depression is
different, and taking medication does not mean that you have failed or weakened
in some way. If you are interested in learning more about antidepressant
treatment options check out my playlist on the various options available to
treat depression. The best part about these suggestions is that they can be
used wherever you are in your depression treatment. Adding these suggestions to
your treatment even if you are taking medication can be very helpful. Treating
depression can be a long-term game and treating this condition from many
different angles can give you a much better chance of living a life where this
can no longer control you. This list of suggestions does not cover all
non-medical treatment options.
